St Vincent 's Hospital Melbourne has a world-class in-patient facility with a large neurological team in the Centre for Neuroscience and Neurological Research. As well as the general neurology ward there is an 8 bed stroke unit with cardiac monitoring and the latest neuroradiological investigational equipment including a new 16 slice helical CT, three on-site MRI machines including the latest Siemens 1.5T MRI scanner. We have the full range of ultrasound modalities including transcranial Doppler, and we have an interest in cerebral SPECT scanning. We offer urgent intravenous thrombolysis and intra-arterial thrombolysis, especially for vertebrobasilar stroke. We have a dedicated stroke registrar and after hours call rotates between the stroke registrar and two neurology registrars.
After discharge follow-up is through a dedicated stroke clinic. Specific cerebrovascular referrals can be made to this clinic by contacting the stroke registrar on 9288 2211.
