You must have a referral from your doctor

This is a legal requirement. If you don't have a valid referral to see a neurologist, you can't claim a medicare rebate. Your referral may go out of date, as some referrals last only 3 months, and some may be for longer periods. How long they last depends on how long was specified when it was written. Referrals from other specialists always last only 3 months. We know this can be an inconvenience, but it is important to have a valid referral, so that you can claim your full medicare entitlement.

Call to make an appointment

Once you have a referral, call the Consulting Rooms on (03) 9288 3045. Your doctor may want to see a particular neurologist, or someone with a specific expertise in a particular field. Our staff can help you decide who is most appropriate. Requests for appointments can be faxed to (03) 9288 3350.

Call: (03) 9288 3045 (business hours) If the line is busy it will divert to an answering machine. Please leave a message and we will call you back.

Fax: (03) 9288 3350

Email: appointments@neurology.net.au, or click here. Remember to specify if you would like the appointment reply emailed.

Write: Appointments, Neurology Consulting Rooms, 5th Floor Daly Wing, St. Vincent's Hospital, Fitzroy, Victoria 3065

Doctors: Please specify the specialty clinic, or specify 'General Clinic' if uncertain. Feel free to call to speak to a neurologist if uncertain, or if the situation is more urgent than a routine booking.

Appointment times and important things to bring:

Please try to get to the department 15 minutes prior to your appointment, particularly if this is your first visit, as we will need to collect some details before you see the doctor. Bring your scans and any test results of letters from doctors you may have. It is always helpful to have a list of your current medictions and other tablets used in the past.

If you are coming because of a blackout or seizure, it is very helpful to bring along someone who has seen the event. If they can't come with you, see if they can give you a contact number or even a written description of the event.
